There weren’t some astonishing results expected in the Carabao Cup Quarter finals this midweek, but there has been a staggering result to show for.
Arsenal faced West Ham while current league leaders Manchester City travelled to Leicester, Chelsea were at home against fellow Premier League side Bournemouth while Manchester United had a trip to border city Bristol to face Bristol City who currently are in the Championship, 2nd tier of English football.
As it Happened:
Arsenal vs West Ham:
Arsenal came away victorious 1-0 at home against the rejuvenated Hammers thanks to a Danny Welbeck goal a couple of minutes from half time. Arsene Wenger fielded his second string side but they got the job done as the Gunners advance to the last four of the cup after some seven seasons.
Leicester City vs Manchester City:
Pep Guardiola’s boys were at Leicester and the 2015-16 League Champions held the current leaders after 120 minutes. It was 1-1 after two hours of play but the Sky Blues won in the penalties 4-3 to advance to the semi finals. Both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez missed for the Foxes while the latter’s shot was saved by Claudio Bravo.
Chelsea vs Bournemouth:
Chelsea won in the cup against the Cherries 2-1 at home thanks to an Alvaro Morata winner in the stoppage time. Willian gave the London side a lead in the first half but Dan Gosling equalised at the final minute, only to be behind again as Morata scored immediately from the restart.
Bristol City vs Manchester United:
The shock of the cup tournament came from Bristol City who won at their home against the Red Devils as midfielder Korey Smith scored a 93rd minute winner after Bryan’s opening goal was nullified by a Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalizer.
The Semi finals will be a two legged affair and it will be played in the second and fourth week of January.
