Arsene Wenger’s men will be eyeing to move on from their last week disappointment against Manchester United and get their heads back on track as they make a trip to the south coast to face Southampton on Sunday.
Injury and Team News:
Southampton have Soares out with an hamstring injury. Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini are all in contention to start against the Gunners, with Pellegrino likely to stick to his tactics of deploying a solitary man up front. They will go with a four men defense and want away defender Virjil Van Dijk is expected to start as well. Apart from Soares, Saints have a strong squad to feature against the Gunners.
Charlie Austin: A man in form
Arsenal are without Santi Cazorla and Shkodran Mustafi who is out with a thigh problem. Wenger will be bringing back his star trio up front. Wilshere is poised to get a nod ahead of Granit Xhaka after the Englishman put up a superb show against BATE Borisov on Thursday in the Europa League. Petr Cech is back in goal while Mertesacker may return in defense.
Arsenal are 15 points behind leaders Manchester City, but Wenger still believes that they are in the title race. It’s a pivotal game for the Gunners as St. Mary’s hasn’t been a happy ground for them, despite they won there last season twice. The front three of Arsenal will need to fire again and the defense need to make less mistakes, as they did against the Red Devils. Win will reignite Arsenal’s top four race as Chelsea lost at West Ham on Saturday. It will be the start of a busy period in the season for the Gunners and they will be aiming to start the festive period with a win at Southampton.
