Although Liverpool were having a four-game winning streak ahead of their trip to Sevilla, the hosts were not far behind as they won four of their last five outings and were still unbeaten at home so far this season.
It was a crucial fixture for both the sides as a win would have taken either of the two through to the Round of 16 of the prestigious UEFA Champions League competition. The game, however, proved to be an outing of two halves where Liverpool gave up a 3-0 lead and the game, thus ended 3-3 at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
Liverpool earned a surprise lead within minutes of kick-off when Georginio Wijnaldum flicked on to the path of Roberto Firmino from Philippe Coutinho’s corner. The Brazilian was left unmarked and made no mistake to finish it into the back of the net. Sevilla then opened up the Reds backline on a couple of occasions but could not find the equalizer. Loris Karius, the Reds custodian, got a hand to the ball to turn it on to the post and Wissam Ben Yedder could not keep it inside despite beating the keeper a couple of minutes later. Liverpool hit back again when Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico stopped Firmino’s strike but conceded in a similar fashion of the first goal. Firmino flicked it on to the far post from Coutinho’s corner and Mane finished with a sensational diving header. Firmino missed a spot-kick in the first leg that cost the Reds a win, but the Brazilian paid back this time around when he scored Liverpool’s third after Mane’s strike was stopped by Rico but fell on to his path quite favorably. The first-half thus ended 3-0 in favor of the visitors.
But the home side made a sensational comeback after the break when Wissam Ben Yedder scored headed home from Ever Banega’s freekick. Alberto Moreno, the ex-Sevilla man, was at fault when he failed to mark the forward. Moreno’s nightmare continued when he conceded a penalty and Ben Yedder scored despite being forced to have a retake. Liverpool collapsed completely and Klopp quickly took off Moreno and replaced him with veteran James Milner. He also brought in Emre Can replacing Coutinho to bring back stability in the middle of the park and strengthen his side defensively. But the Reds could not cling on to the lead as Pizarro equalized in the stoppage time to complete a marvellous comeback.
The game ends all square and the Reds now have to grab a result against Spartak Moscow in the final group stage game at Anfield to progress through to the next round.
