Liverpool’s disappointing display against Southampton last season and Arsenal’s sensational victory against bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur put the Reds on alert ahead of their Anfield outing against the Saints. A win was needed to keep pushing for a ‘ top four’ place and Liverpool did it quite efficiently by grabbing a sensational 3-0 victory against their Saturday counterparts.
The Reds were on a three-game winning streak and the presence of ‘Fab Four’ up front made them look confident against a mighty opponent. But the injury of Joel Matip left them with Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren – two of their vulnerable central defensive options ahead of the outing. The Merseysiders, however, looked in complete control from the very beginning and the Saints failed to create any sort of agony in Liverpool goal. It was the magical Mo Salah who continued his sublime form and netted twice in the first-half to take his goal tally to 14 in 18 appearances for his new club.
The Reds kept on ‘gegenpressing’ after the break and it was Philippe Coutinho who struck the third goal after setting it up perfectly for Salah’s second of the afternoon. Lovren, on the other hand, delivered a solid display against his former employers which will surely uplift his confidence ahead of their crucial outings against Sevilla and Chelsea.
