Liverpool’s season hit a massive low last weekend following a disastrous 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. A reaction was badly needed at Anfield and Jurgen Klopp’s men didn’t disappoint this time as they secured a comfortable 3-0 win against David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town.
The newly promoted Terriers were high on confidence after securing a historic 2-1 win against the mighty Manchester United last Saturday. Wagner, Klopp’s friend and former assistant at Borussia Dortmund, was expected to put up another exciting show this afternoon. The Reds, as expected, had a better possession and could have earned a first-half lead when the referee, Kevin Friend, awarded them a penalty in closing minutes of the first-half. The Terriers skipper Tommy Smith brought Roberto Firmino down inside the box but Mohamed Salah failed to convert the spot-kick and the rebound struck the woodwork from Jordan Henderson’s strike.
Wagner’s deep defensive strategy did not last long as Daniel Sturridge broke the deadlock minutes into the second half when Smith failed to clear Alberto Moreno’s forward ball which was eventually converted by the Englishman who netted the100th club goal of his career. Sturridge could have scored again within minutes but was denied spectacularly by Mathias Jørgensen with a sliding block. But the resulting corner was superbly taken by James Milner and Roberto Firmino made no mistake to double the lead. It was not Salah’s afternoon as his strike was tipped onto the post by custodian Jonas Lossl five minutes later. However, the Egyptian ended the game on a high note as he set it up for Georginio Wijnaldum whose thumping strike earned the Reds a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Liverpool, thus, secured a much-needed win and will be high on confidence ahead of their midweek Champions League tie against NK Maribor.
