It was a rough start for the two teams and yellow cards started flying around within first ten minutes. Very early in the game, Martial and Smith got into a fight and were booked. The Frenchman, in particular, was terrible in his tackles and was warned several times. On the other hand, due to a sudden injury, in-form United defender Jones had to leave the pitch after 22nd minute and that was a big blow for Jose Mourinho.
The effect of the absence of Jones was imminent. Five minutes after the departure of the English center back, Huddersfield got a very welcome breakthrough. Former Manchester City man Mooy started a brilliant move from the middle of the pitch as Mata lost the ball to the physicality of the Huddersfield midfielder. Mooy then passed the ball to Ince who took a nice shot. But, it was not enough to beat De Gea. However, the rebound fell kindly to Mooy again and he finished what he started with a sublime finish to the right hand corner.
The misery for United was not over yet. Few minutes after the first goal, it was another grave mistake by the substitute defender and this time, Depoitre capitalized on the chance. It was an easy opportunity for the home forward who went past De Gea to find the back of the nets, and within the first 33 minutes, Huddersfield were 2-0 up. United tried to get back to business afterwards and pressed the home team hard, especially during the stoppage time, but a resilient defense from the hosts ensured that the two-goal-lead remained intact at the break.
In the second half, the visitors started to keep the most of the possessions, but Huddersfield players were happy to let them do that and enjoy the lead. And in spite of having more than 75% possessions of the half, United failed to reduce the gap for the first part. But, then, a determined run from Lukaku at the stroke of 78th minute saw a fantastic cross delivered to the box. The ball met an onrushing Rashford who perfectly headed the ball home to make it 2-1. The away side failed to do any magic after and Huddersfield managed to get one of their biggest win in history.
