Liverpool’s goal drought continued even after the international break but when the Reds failed to win against age-old rivals Manchester United and only managed a scoreless draw at Anfield on Saturday afternoon. But they were hopeful of a positive outcome against Maribor tonight when they traveled to Slovenia to encounter NK Maribor in a Champions League group stage encounter.
The game, as expected proved to be a goal-fest for the visitors who secured a gigantic 7-0 win and lifted up their confidence ahead of crucial Wembley encounter against Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool started the game with full dominance and possession and had a perfect inception when they scored 3 goals within first 20 minutes of the game against the European minnows. Roberto Firmino tapped in from close range picking up Mohamed Salah’s delivery. James Milner then delivered a perfect cross for Philippe Coutinho who finished in style to earn his side’s second. It was Mohamed Salah next who picked up Firmino’s pass and slotted home with an excellent finish. The Egyptian scored again late in the first half with a simple tap-in from Alberto Moreno’s cross. Firmino missed a couple of clear opportunities, otherwise, the scoreline could have been much worse than 4-0 for the hosts in the first half itself.
Liverpool started the game with a similar impact in the second half and it was Roberto Firmino who scored his second with a header from Coutinho’s free-kick. Maribor looked little more compact after conceding their fifth but the Reds hit back twice in closing minutes – three of Liverpool substitutes combined well up front and it was Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who scored his maiden Liverpool goal after picking up a pass from Daniel Sturridge. Young right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the final nail in their coffin when he picked up Coutinho’s pass and his deflected long-range effort ended up into the back of the net.
The game thus ended 7-0 in favor of the Reds who regain the top spot of the group table for the time being.
