Italian football is almost synonymous to the age-old rivalry between the two Milanese giants – AC and Inter. It’s time for the first Milan derby of the season in the Serie A 2017/18. The two age-old rivals will lock horns on Sunday at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza aka The Stadio San Siro from 20.45 CET (IST 00.15 Sunday).
Ideally, the middle class of the city of Milan are Inter fans while the working class supports the older AC Milan. Inter was formed 19 years after AC in 1908, following a conflict with Milan about the playing foreign players at the club. Over the course of years it has been seen that while AC have always preferred to have more number of Italian players up their ranks, Inter have stayed true to their motto (Brothers of the World) and have seen world famous foreigners play for them.
The first encounter goes back to as far as to January 10, 1909, when the Rossoneris came out 3-2 victors against the newly formed Inter. There has been since, 218 official matches in the history of the fixture with 77 more unofficial matches. While Inter have come out victors 77 times (official matches only), their rivals have won 75 and 66 have been draws. The most recent meeting between the two ended in a 2-2 draw last April.
The Milan derby has witnessed a total of 590 goals over the years with the Nerazzuris scoring 296 to Milan’s 294.
Former Ukraine international and current manager, Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko is the all-time highest scorer in the fixture with 14 goals for Milan. The legendary Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the stadium is named, is second on the list with 13 goals (12 for Inter and 1 for Milan).
As many as 38 players have played for either clubs in the clubs’ 109-year-old rivalry. Both clubs have won 18 league titles and 30 domestic trophies. While AC have had 7 European clubs to Inter’s 3, the later has won Europa League or the UEFA Cup thrice to the former’s none. Milan have also won 2 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup to Inter’s none.
The two teams have had different starts to their respective seasons. While Inter have made a steady start under new coach Luciano Spalletti, Milan have struggled. Inter are 1 of the 12 unbeaten teams this season in the top 8 leagues of Europe with 6 wins and a draw, including a crucial 3-1 away win against AS Roma. They currently have 19 points from 7 games (same points as the second placed Juventus and third-placed Lazio) and fourth in the table only on goal difference with Sunday’s match in hand.
Milan, on the other hand, have 12 points from 7 games and are currently 7th with 4 wins and 3 defeats. Even after spending close to €200m in the summer transfer market Milan have still lost to Roma at home and to Lazio and Sampdoria away. Coach Vincenzo Montella has been under tremendous pressure of late to deliver results.
