Liverpool vs Manchester United – Premier League’s greatest ever rivalry gathered enough hype for past few days ahead of this Saturday afternoon encounter at Anfield. The Red Devils were flying high with successive victories whereas the hosts were struggling with only one win in past seven outings.
The game, despite all promises and excitements, ended up in a futile scoreless draw and Mourinho’s defensive strategy of securing one point from a tricky away fixture worked fine for the visitors.
Liverpool started the with more possession and pressing in midfield. United were happy to sit back and maintained defensive resilience by breaking down the Reds’ movement in their attacking third. The Reds got the best opportunity of the game in the first half when David De Gea sensationally stopped Joel Matip’s effort from close range. Manchester United, too, had their opportunity when Romelu Lukaku failed to beat Simon Mignolet one-on-one. Lukaku was largely isolated otherwise and had only a few touches throughout the game.
The Reds kept on creating chances in the second half too. Emre Can, Mohamed Salah failed to convert their opportunities and the game eventually ended in a scoreless draw at Anfield like last year’s encounter.
Mourinho, the United boss, is content with the point as he successfully implements his strategy among the players. Liverpool will now travel to Slovenia to encounter NK Maribor in Champions League group stage outing and need to get back on track as early as possible with a convincing win.
