The visitors started the match in the best possible fashion. Only four minutes into the game, Martial’s delicious cross found Lukaku inside the box and the forward made no mistake to overpower his marker and slot home the first goal of the match. United, at this moment, were raiding at the CSKA goal with all their might. At the stroke of 12th minute, Blind worked out a brilliant ball from the left hand side and Mkhitaryan was the one to hit it on target. Fortunately for the hosts, the goalkeeper managed to parry it away with a stunning save. Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow also got a decent chance from outside the box, but De Gea was alert and agile enough to put it behind for a corner.

After a few minutes, Mkhitaryan was fouled inside the box by Schennikov and the referee immediately pointed towards the penalty spot. Martial was the one to take the spotkick and he, as expected, made no mess of the chance and easily doubled the lead.

CSKA Moscow’s day further worsened at 26th minute, when Lukaku made it 3-0. It was another inviting cross from Martial and the home defenders miscued it terribly, to hand over a simple tap in for the big Belgian. He grabbed the opportunity by and large and scored his tenth goal of the season with ease. Eight minutes later, the centre forward was at the heart of an attack once again. This time, he fashioned a shot from a few yards outside the box, and he was on target. But, that shot was not good enough to beat Akinfeev on this occasion.

The rest of the first half was almost same story, Manchester United raiding one attack after another and CSKA Moscow trying heart and soul to put some effect in the game. The two teams went to the break with the home side trailing by three goals.

The Red Devils started the second half in the same way, and the effect was imminent. Martial played one-on-one with Akinfeev and the goalkeeper came on top. But, his save could only find Mkhitaryan in the end and he was there to slot it home from a close range. United were 4-0 up within the hour mark.

The away side continued to attack over the last half an hour of the game. Substitute Jesse Lingard and Matteo Darmian found golden opportunities during that time, but the CSKA custodian kept them at bay. And then, towards the fag end of the game, the hosts found a consolation goal to their name. It was another substitute, Konstantin Kuchaev of the Russian side, who was played inside the box. He somehow managed to take a shot that beat De Gea at the goal. It was a tidy finish from the player, and it was all CSKA Moscow could get from the Champions League encounter.
