Following a hard-fought 3-2 win away at Leicester City, Liverpool, the five-time European Champions, were upbeat once more ahead of their trip to Russia to encounter Spartak Moscow in their Champions League group stage encounter.
The Reds had to settle for a disappointing 2-2 draw at Anfield against Sevilla in their previous Champions League outing and were determined to register their first away in the competition since 2009 against the Russian champions. Spartak missed the likes of Denis Glushakov and Quincy Promes with injuries and Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp was looking to capitalize on their complications.
Liverpool were the more dominating side but it was the hosts who drew the first blood when Fernando scored from a free-kick around 23rd-minute mark after Philippe Coutinho gave away a free-kick 25 yards away from goal. Loris Karius was late to react and failed to save the strike. The Reds were soon to react as Coutinho equalized within 10 minutes following a brilliant one-two with Sadio Mane. However, the Reds could have scored more goals as Mohamed Salah was controversially brought down into the box but the referee decided not to award a spot-kick. Artem Rebrov, the Spartak custodian, pulled off a few smart stops whereas Roberto Firmino and Salah missed simplest of opportunities in closing minutes and the first-half ended in all square.
Liverpool were even more dominant in the second half but kept on wasting opportunities. Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and substitute Daniel Sturridge wasted plenty of opportunities which should have been converted considering their quality and acknowledgments they receive from the supporters as well as experts. Selikhov, the substitute keeper, made an exquisite save to deny Salah is closing seconds which was good enough to earn a point and the game ended 1-1.
