It has been a brilliant display by the rejuvenated Manchester United side, who have maintained an unbeaten record so far. Not only that, the Red Devils have also been on a scoring spree, netting as many as 23 goals from seven matches in all competitions. They will aim for another magnificent outing against Southampton on Saturday.
Southampton, on the other hand, will have to concentrate on finding the nets. In five Premier League matches, they could only score four goals. Although they have not lost more than one game, they are reeling at the ninth spot in the league table, and a win against the league’s joint toppers will surely motivate the Saints to go the distance in the upcoming days.
Recent form in the league (latest first):
Manchester United: W-D-W-W-W
The home side will miss the services of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who has left for the birth of his daughter. Matt Targett is not 100% fit as well. However, these absences will not affect Southampton that much, as they will not be in the starting eleven anyway. Mauricio Pellegrini, on the other hand, will be ecstatic to have Virgil Van Dijk back in the ranks. The star defender came off the bench against Crystal Palace, and it is most likely that he will start the proceedings against United. The rest of the team are fit and running, and will look forward to cause an upset against Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho, on the contrary, has a significant worry to take care of. Paul Pogba has hamstring problems and he will sit this one out. In addition, reserve bench defenders Marcos Rojo and Alex Tuanzebe are not fit as well. Marouane Fellaini has delivered well in absence of Pogba and chances are high that he will get a starting berth once again. Up front, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford are expected to accompany Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Following is the probable lineup for Manchester United.
Manchester United, with the brilliant form they are in, should not see an upset against a struggling Southampton. Our prediction is a 2-0 win in favour of the Red Devils.
Van Dijk’s return will be extremely important for Southampton and he has to be at his best to stop the visitors’ lethal attack. The Saints’ main problem this season has been scoring and the boss will rely on Manolo Gabbiadini or Shane Long to deliver.
On the other hand, Lukaku and Mkhitaryan will be the key men for United. And, beyond doubt, it will be on Nemanja Matic once again to hold the midfield together. Since the signing, the former Chelsea man’s show has been top notch and Mourinho will bank on him to keep it together for the away side.
Southampton win: 5.50
Manchester United win: 1.72
