The Red Devils were in flaming mode last weekend as they feasted upon Ronald Koeman’s Everton side at Old Trafford on Matchday 5 of the Premier League season.
Second half goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial penalty from 12 yards condemned Everton to their biggest defeat of the season. The Toffees lost 3-0 in the European League to Serie A side Atlanta but Martial’s penalty ensured United inflicted more damage on Everton than any team else at the moment in the current campaign. The likes of Rooney and Sigurdsson looked promising in transition but it was not enough to stop the host as they made their mark in the game to the delight of their manager Jose Mourinho.
The league giants further continued their journey with another big (4-1) win against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup game last night. So far, the Red Devils are unbeaten in the campaign and have scored 23 goals from 7 games in all competitions. On the wake of this, let us evaluate some significant points on United’s current run.
United Good for the Title:
The hosts were decent going forward as they produced some magnificent form which is characteristics of the Theatre of Dreams. Manchester United took to the pitch to signal their title credentials as they made Everton crawl in front of Old Trafford fans. This certainly felt like the United of old (Ferguson era) as they are gaining confidence from each game.
With the likes of United attacking options in Lukaku, Martial and Rashford coupled with the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic later in the season, there are signs United may finish above the rest on the League log.
However, many would argue that it is still early to make a call on that but that is exactly what it looks like at the moment as United had swept away every opposition that had come their way in the season just like they did against Everton.
Clean Sheet For United:
The untied setup deserves the credit for another week’s clean-sheet as they continue to keep their cool at the back all season, except the 2-2 draw at Britannia Stadium with Stoke City. The United side have proven how efficient they are at the back with the partnership of Eric Baily and Phil Jones as watertight as ever in a long while.
Mourinho loves his team to keep their defensive configuration intact as this has seen him achieve success in the various sides he had managed over the years. This has been productive for United as it has taken them to a positive height from which they benefited in recent times.
Such positive philosophy and team dynamics was evident as they beat Basel 3-0 in the Match Day 1 of the UEFA Champions Leagues following their return to the Europe elite competition.
Lukaku Continues To Flourish:
The big Belgian hit man has contributed enough to the team as the forward has found the back of the net in almost every single game for United this season.
He made the assist for Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal before tucking away the team’s third goal after side-footing wide from a glorious opportunity in the first half despite beating the defender in the process.
It has been a productive spell for Lukaku as he continues to enjoy a new lease of life at Old Trafford under manager Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho Deserves the Credit:
The Portuguese tactician deserves kudos for a wonderful team performance from United in the current campaign.
Just like it is said that a coach is as good as his last game and the 4-0 win over Everton speaks volume for the Portuguese manager.
Since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson United has struggled both in the League and in Europe extensively. This seems to be changing now as the Portuguese manager seems to be turning things around with a breath of freshness and quality display within the mix.
The team is playing with attacking incision and a renewed level of belief and this side looks destined for great things as they sits joint top with Manchester City at the top of the league log.
For now the sky can only be the spring board for this United side flourishing under the capable hands of the tactician and Charismatic manager Jose Mourinho as on wish him and his side all the best in the new season.
