Liverpool were enjoying an impressive run ahead of the international break, whereas City despite winning against Bournemouth, had a slow start of their new campaign under Pep Guardiola. The Merseysiders have always been a bogey team for the Citizens, however, the Spanish gaffer was looking to alter the scenario this term when they hosted the Reds at Etihad this afternoon. And they did it in the most spectacular way as they registered a thumping victory scoring five past Liverpool.

Liverpool started the game with less intent and conceded at around 24th minutes mark when Kevin De Bruyne’s sublime through ball was converted by the Argentine hitman Sergio Aguero. Liverpool had a chance to equalize but Egyptian Mohamed Salah failed to beat the keeper Ederson even after exposing the City defense. To add to their misery, Sadio Mane, their top performer, was shown a straight red following a challenge on the Manchester City custodian which looked unintentional from the replay. Liverpool, being down to ten-men, looked even more vulnerable and Gabriel Jesus took the opportunity to double the lead from a majestic Kevin De Bruyne cross into the added minutes of first-half football.

City looked even more dominant after the break as Liverpool lacked any defensive composure. Soon they conceded their third of the afternoon after a decent link-up play between Aguero and Jesus with the later finished it into an empty net. Jesus was taken off to be replaced by German youngster Leroy Sane who soon joins the party as he scored from close range to find the fourth for his side. The humiliation was not over yet and Sane found his second in added minutes with an outrageous strike that finished into the top corner of the net. The Reds could have conceded more if Mignolet had not pulled off a few stunning saves. The scoreline thus ended 5-0 in favor of the home sides who are back on track to challenge for the title.
