Seven instances where Wenger hinted about Chamberlain’s future

Arsenal have agreed a fee for Alex Oxlade Chamberlain with Chelsea but the player rejected it and the England midfielder is poised to join Liverpool if the Reds bid for the want away player. Premier League champions Chelsea agreed a £35million transfer fee for the England international but his next destination remains unclear as he is said to favour a move to Liverpool.

But wherever he ends up going, selling their beloved Ox has been a shock to most of the Arsenal fans as it really came out of nowhere.

Earlier he rejected a 180k pound salary per week and made it clear that he wants to leave Arsenal despite of the lucrative offer. Now it was an eyebrow raising incident that Arsenal are allowing him to leave.

Oxlade is on his last year of the contract and though Gunners are adamant that Sanchez and Ozil will stay and see out their contract, they have decided to let the bright English talent go, which is very surprising.

But Wenger in the past few months have always said that he wants Oxlade Chamberlain to stay and even insisted that the young star will stay at the Emirates surely as he rates him highly. Arsene Wenger came to public and said he won’t be sold but it seems that there has been a drastic change to his stance. But to be honest, Wenger never was too confident about him signing but he heaped praises for the player and may have hoped that Chamberlain may change his mind, which happens to be not the case.

Here are some instances where Arsene Wenger spoke in public regarding Oxlade Chamberlain’s future in the last six months or so-

March 8 – Dismissing reports Chamberlain wants to leave:

I haven’t seen that, I don’t know. All I can say is personally I rate him highly, I showed that in the way I kept faith in him when he was injured.
I personally wish that he stays at the club, he’s a very promising player who has developed very well, looks to have the values we rate at this club.

April 10 – Wenger admits Oxlade’s importance:

I personally think it is vital that Chamberlain stays at Arsenal. We bought him when he was very young, we have built him up and I think he has a great mentality. I like his mentality and he has a good football brain. It would be a big damage for us to lose this kind of player.

April 23 – His wish for Chamberlain:

I want Oxlade-Chamberlain to be part of Arsenal Football Club for the next ten years.

He is a big player and we live in a world where agents are linked to the press and can always have a tactic to make the whole package come up.

May 4 – Wenger still wasn’t sure and loosing hope:

He looks like he’s made a move forward, I’m pleased with him.
I believe that he’s happy in his new position – at the moment he’s convinced that he has all the qualities to play there and it’s given him confidence.
He has to commit his future to the club and hopefully he’ll do so in the summer.

July 15 – Oxlade-Chamberlain will ‘100% stay’, that was a lie :

I expect him to stay, 100%. No matter the speculation, he will stay.

August 16 – big words, his last thrust to make him stay:

I want him to stay here for a long time – I’m convinced that he will be in the next two or three years the English player everyone looks at.

August 24 – Arsene’s last throw of the dice:

He is one of the players the team needs to be built around. I want him to commit to the club.
I want to keep my best players. I want to keep everyone on board. For me they have a responsibility to the club. I am highly determined to keep him.
