The UEFA Champions League group stage draw took place in Monaco last night and 32 teams were allocated in eight groups.
The teams were allocated in four different pots according to their UEFA co efficient rankings, only the Pot 1 contained defending Champions Real Madrid, and domestic league champions of 7 highest ranked UEFA countries.
Pot 1: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Monaco, Spartak Moscow
Pot 2: Barcelona, Atletico, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Man City, FC Porto, Man United
Pot 3: Napoli, Tottenham, FC Basel, Olympiakos, Anderlecht, Liverpool, Roma, Besiktas
Pot 4: Celtic, CSKA Moscow, Sporting CP, APOEL Nicosia, Feyenoord, NK Maribor, FK Qarabag, RB Leipzig
This year there were two legends of football who completed the draw procedure.
Francesco Totti and Andrei Shevchenko were on duties as they drew the clubs and the groups respectively.
The former also got President’s award for his utmost dedication to the game of football.
Group A: Benfica, Manchester United, FC Basel, CSKA Moscow.
Group B: Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Anderlecht, Celtic
Group C: Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Roma, FK Qarabag
Group D: Juventus, Barcelona, Olympiakos, Sporting CP
Group E: Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Liverpool, NK Maribor
Group F: Shakhtar Donetsk, Manchester City, Napoli, Feyenoord
Group G: Monaco, FC Porto, Besiktas, RB Leipzig
Group H: Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham, APOEL Nicosia
Group H and Group E are probably the Group of Death while other groups are pretty competitive as well. Probably the easiest Group was Group G.
Qarabag FC and RB Leipzig were the teams who will make their debut in the Champions League this season. The Azerbaijan Champions Qarabag also are the first club from their country to achieve this feat.
- Gianluigi Buffon was awarded last season’s Goalkeeper of the tournament award, while Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo – the Real Madrid trio got the awards for best defender, midfielder and striker respectively.
- Dutch footballer Like Martens was honoured with the UEFA Women’s Player of the year.
- Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the UEFA Mens’ Player of the year.
The Champions league kicks off three weeks from now and the first match week will be September 12-13.
