VIDEO : Real Madrid thrash Barcelona to lift the first trophy of the season

It was a terrific display from Real Madrid, who won the Super Copa with ease.

Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Copa 5-1 on aggregate and came out 2-0 victors on the night as goals by Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema helped Los Blancos to yet another title under Zinedine Zidane.

Playing without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, who was watching from the stands, Zidane chose to keep the first leg heroes Isco, Gareth Bale and Casemiro on the bench, and started with Asensio, Vazquez and Kovacic instead. Barcelona also made a few changes, with Mascherano replacing Anres Iniesta. Coach Valverde decided to try a new, 3-5-2, formation with Suarez and Messi upfront.

From the start it was all Real Madrid. Every time they got the ball, Les Merengues looked like they would score and sure they did, twice in the first half without reply. The first goal was a thing of beauty from local boy Marco Asensio, who controlled the ball with one touch and unleashed a powerful, swerving, dipping left footed shot into the back of net as Ter Stegen could only look on, shocked at another wonder strike from the Madrid starlet. Asensio has come up in leaps and bounds and on current form deserves a starting place in the Madrid first XI. He has scored in almost every competition debut he has played in and looks set for a very bright future.

The second goal came courtesy the Frenchman Karim Benzema. After Vazque has dispossessed Sergio Busquets in his own half, Asensio got the ball and made the pass to Marcelo cutting down the wing. Marcelo’s cross was beautifully met by Benzema, who controlled the ball, turned around, lost his marker, and finished with a left footed volley all in one motion, leaving Umiti and Ter Stegen stranded.

Both teams had a couple of chances late on to score but the scoreline would not change and Real would run out 5-1 victors overall, after leading 3-1 from the first leg.

Barcelona looked flat without Neymar and only Lionel Messi showed some spark. need to splash the cash they collected from Neymar’s transfer soon and build the team because at this rate, it looks like Real would run away with the La Liga title.
