The defending champions Chelsea have started their Premier League campaign as the way that the pre season friendlies suggested prior to the season. Or it can be considered as even worse than that. They have been beaten 2-3 at their home Stamford Bridge in their opening fixture against Burnley.
Chelsea had been pushed onto the back foot in the 14th minute of the game as their skipper Gary Cahill was shown direct marching order by the referee Craig Pawson for a stupid two footed challenge on the Burnley man Steven Defour. This particular blow at the so early stage of the game had let them being totally outplayed by the visitors. As a result, Chelsea conceded all the three goals in the first half of the game.
The tally started in the 24th minute of the game following a mistake by the Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Burnley right wing-back Matthew Lowton delivered a delightful cross into the Chelsea box and it was dealt by his teammate Sam Vokes, who drove a weak shot into the far corner of the post. Courtois had to do better to save the ball.
The visitors increased the lead in the 39th minute of the game following a brilliance from their left wing-back Stephen Ward. He received the ball on the left side of the Chelsea box after he easily beat N’Golo Kante and fired a shot at the far post. Chelsea’s last man on the goal had hardly to do anything than to pick up the ball from the back of the net.
Burnley continued the rampage until it was the 43rd minute of the game when Sam Vokes scored his second goal following a brilliant header received from his teammate Steven Defour.
Chelsea tried to create an impact in making a come back into the game in the second half after their new signing Alvaro Morata was featured into the game in the 59th minute. Eventually, the Spaniard netted the first goal for the home team in the 69th minute of the game following a delightful header in reply to Willian’s terrific floater into the box.
Things went worse for the defending champions as the playmaker Cesc Fabregas was also sent off in the 81st minute following his second booking in the game. However, Chelsea have shown great mentality as they reduced the gap with only nine men on the pitch.
In the 87th minute of the game, David Luiz received a back flicked header by Alvaro Morata and fired into the back of the net. Chelsea’s woes have been increased prior to the Spurs game, they will play in the next weekend as the suspensions of Cesc Fabregas and the skipper Gary Cahill. In addition to that injury to Tiemou Bakayoko, Eden Hazard and Pedro Rodriguez will also let them unavailable for the tie.
