Chelsea manager Antonio Conte revealed last week that if he gets a chance to sign only one player, he would sign Harry Kane and praised him highly. But former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin believes there is a player in the team who can deliver bigger things at Stamford Bridge.
Pat Nevin believes that their Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi has more to offer and even compared his goal scoring form with Harry Kane.
“Our Belgian striker had limited opportunities last season but having watched him a good deal even before he came to the Blues, one thing that was never in doubt was the fact that this man can score goals,” Nevin wrote on Chelsea’s official website.
This words come from him after seeing the Belgian in prolific form during the pre season and also at the end stage of last season. Batshuayi was more of a fringe character but got his goals when he was given an opportunity. He also scored Chelsea’s title winning goal at West Brom and scored 5 Premier League goals from only one start, remaining nineteen coming as substitutes.
Nevin also said that his goal scoring per minute was best in the club and it was just 79 minutes per goal, which was better than Harry Kane. Kane got the Premier league Golden boot last season and the former Chelsea winger believes that Batshuayi can be a real hit if Conte uses him properly. The Blues have also signed Morata this season but Nevin believes Batshuayi will have a role to play.
“Pre-season is for building things up slowly but surely so that the players can burst into the first game in peak form. It is about spotting the weaknesses and sorting them out during this period. It is also about seeing who is improving and growing within the group and it might just be that Michy will be a far bigger player for the Blues this season than last,” he added.
Batshuayi joined Chelsea from French side Marseille and has been capped 8 times for Belgium, scoring 3 goals.
