Arsenal started the Emirates Cup with a victory over the Portuguese side Benfica and sit at the top of the table for now. The Gunners beat Benfica 5-2 in an entertaining match at the Emirates.
As It Happened:
Arsenal’s homecoming was embraced by almost a full house Emirates Stadium as the supporters welcomed their new signings. Arsene Wenger gave some of his young players a chance and fielded a team with three at the back. The three men backline though was exposed as Benfica got an unexpected lead when Cervi’s deflected shot found the back of the net. Arsenal though hit back through Walcott as the England international scored twice in eight minutes to give the home side a lead. At half time it was 2-2 as Eduardo Salvio again got Benfica back on level terms.
Arsenal new signing Kolasinac started the game
After the break, Arsenal came back hard and regained their lead on 52nd minute when Lopez scored an own goal. Giroud, Arsenal’s often unsung hero got his goal as Arsenal got a two goal advantage. Arsenal’s youngster Alex Iwobi then scored a screamer to complete the scoreline. The match also saw the Gunners’ fans welcoming their record signing Alexandre Lacazette as he came on as a substitute. Arsenal also played the match wearing their newly unveiled blue away kit, which has been a tradition now a days.
In the another match of the day, Sevilla beat RB Leipzig 1-0 courtesy of a solitary goal from spot by Ben Yedder. Arsenal will play Sevilla today to conclude the pre season tournament.
