Manchester United, the 20 times Premier League champions, are gearing up for the upcoming campaign under Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho and the former Chelsea boss is eyeing a title chase in his second season at Old Trafford.
Although the Red Devils snatched a couple of silverware (League Cup and Europa League) last term, they only managed a sixth placed league finish despite bringing in top resources like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly. The gaffer is now keen to improve their league status and reclaim the title once again that they last won in 2013 during legendary Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson’s last year of glorious realm.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have brought in two new faces in form of Swedish centre-back Viktor Lindelof as well as former Everton hitman Romelu Lukaku. Despite losing out on a few key resources ( Antoine Griezmann and James Rodriguez), Mourinho has not yet given up and still pursuing the signing of Monaco sensation Fabinho and Tottenham Hotspur’s versatile Englishman Eric Dier.
But the chase of Ivan Perisic, one of United’s early summer targets, has been stalled since a couple of bids ( £35 mil and £39.5 mil respectively) were rejected by the Serie A heavyweights. They were reportedly holding out for a €50 mil fee for the 28-year old Croatian winger, but no improved bid has been received ever since and Luciano Spalletti, the Internazionale boss, has strongly opposed the idea of letting Perisic leave late in the window.
“Until now, there hasn’t been any important contact. There was something you already know about at the beginning of the window there was no follow-up and so, for me, the topic is over. It’s true as time goes by, it becomes more and more difficult to replace him with another player. I will strongly oppose the sale of Perisic if an offer comes.”
Hopes of signing Perisic is now in utter jeopardy and Manchester United must come up with an alluring bid to test Inter’ resolve for their prized asset.
