India have started their tour to the island country brilliantly as the visitors put up a mammoth 399 for 3 at the end of the first days, courtesy to centurion duos Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara. Under newly contracted Ravi Shastri, the team have had a good beginning to say the least.
Winning the toss, Virat Kohli elected to bat first and that has proved to be an appropriate decision given the display the Indian batters put up.
India started steadily but lost Abhinav Mukund early as he was caught in the bowling of Nuwan Pradeep. But since that early slip, Shikhar Dhawan and Pujara steadied the Indian ship as the duo took India to 115 for 1 at Lunch. After the break Dhawan started mayhem and demolished every Lankan bowlers, he was on fire and played some exquisite shots to get his hundred and his blazing inning remembered of his debut against the Aussies where he scored 187. He bettered that and along with Pujara notched up a 253 run partnership before falling just 10 short of a deserving double hundred. Indian captain followed his steps soon after as he departed without troubling the scorers a lot, by just a mere score of 3.
The hosts thought to have got an opening but they were denied any further damage as Pujara and Rahane resurrected the Indian innings. Pujara has batted brilliantly and his calm batting masterclass has left him on unbeaten on 144 at the end of the day’s play. Rahane also is there at the crease after a gutsy 39.
For the Lankans, it’s been a tough day and their only notable bowler was Nuwan Pradeep who got all the three wickets.
- India will look to capitalize and add at least 250 more runs to their total. With still decent batsmen to come, it will be the least the team must think.
- Sri Lanka should forget the woeful day and aim to come up with a better performance tomorrow and break the Indian middle order and wrap the things fast.
Player of the Day: Shikhar Dhawan
