The steady rise of Emiliano Martinez

Life as a footballer is not always easy, and coming through the academy ranks of a big club can create even tougher hurdles for a young mind to cope up with everything and establish himself as a first team player. Many players do leave the team and join clubs where they will get more opportunities, but some stay and fight for their place and eventually end up cementing a place for them in the first team.

That has been the case for an Argentine, Emiliano Martinez who has fought hard enough in the past years and seems to have finally established himself as a 2nd choice Arsenal keeper.

Martinez may well be Arsenal’s new 2nd choice keeper

Martinez, born in Mar del Plata, Argentina joined the Gunners in 2010 from Argentine side Independiente. Since that time he has come up along the ranks of Arsenal academy and reserves and since 2012 he has made appearances for the first team, mostly in the cup competitions.

So far he has made 4 league appearances for the club and in total 13 times he has featured in the goal for Arsenal. He was always a promising talent but never got the due streak of chances due to the presence of Szczesny and Fabianski. Also the arrival of Petr Cech limited his chances even more and he became 4th choice keeper for Arsenal for a brief moment of time. But tides have changed and the sailor has finally managed to direct his hip towards the right path, as it is poised that Emiliano may start the season as a 2nd choice keeper for Arsenal.

In his stint, he has joined 4 different clubs on loan and performed well for them. The 24 year old had a lucrative offer from Valencia but he may opt to stay with Arsenal and fight for his place. Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of Martinez it is quite obvious that the Gunners won’t allow to loose the Argentine after they have already sold Szczesny to Juventus and David Ospina may well also seek pastures new as Turkish giants Fenerbahce are interested.

It is a pivotal moment for Martinez as he may be tempted for a move for regular football but there may be a huge opportunity for him beckons at Arsenal. He has waited so long for his breakthrough and now he seems to be just a footstep away from securing his place at Arsenal. With Cech’s increasing age, Wenger may look for rotations and some decent performances there can change the luck for Emiliano.

The former Argentina U20 international was a part of the pre season tour to China and Australia and showcased some top notch performances. He helped Arsenal to win against Bayern in a friendly as he saved a couple of kicks from the spot in the tie breaker.

Beside his goal keeping attributes, the former Wolves shot stopper also has a superb temperament and that is widely admired by his manager and other colleagues. Petr Cech is also another person from whom he can learn a lot about goal keeping, which will only help him to grow as a better footballer.

So it’s a no brainer that Emiliano must look to continue his push for the first choice spot at Arsenal, rather than making a move in this delicate moment of his career. His progression has been slow but steady, now it requires the nurture and a focused mentality that surely can take him to greater heights at the Emirates.
