Jos Buttler, England’s wicketkeeper batsman has come out in support of his skipper Eoin Morgan’s decision to bench himself in the must-win game against South Africa.
The Mumbai Indians batsman focused on the importance of cricketers playing the sport with a relieved set of mind when there’s too much cricket on the calendar.
Eoin Morgan, the captain of the England team, received a lot of flak after he opted out to play in the decider at Cardiff so that others in the team could get an opportunity. Players like Michael Vaughan and James Taylor condemned this decision.
Michael Vaughan tweeted, ”1-1 … Series decider … and the England Skipper is resting !!1 #WTF ….. Worlds gone mad,” while James Taylor expressed similar sentiments in the commentary box “He’s the leader and he should be playing”.
But Eoin’s move did not upset England since the other players, Tom Curran and David Malan stood up to the occasion and England won the series 2-1.
“It shows how much cricket gets played. It’s very important to keep guys mentally fresh. If you turned up here, saw a brilliant game of cricket and England win the series, then as an England fan I think you can go home very happy,” Jos Buttler was quoted as saying on Wisden India.
He also heaped praises on David Malan, saying that he proved England has a lot of talent knocking on the selectors door. He went on to say that Malan showed great composure on a wicket which he made look a lot easier than it was, and looked like he was playing his 50th game and not first.
Buttler praised the others in the team too, but said that the performance by Malan stood out among the rest. As for Eoin Morgan, his decision to rest himself in the game didn’t prove too costly.
