There seems to be no end to the voices that have come out in support of ex India head coach Anil Kumble, who resigned from his post despite being given an extension in contract for the tour of West Indies.
Virat Kohli has come under the scanner, for many veterans of Indian cricket are slamming the young captain for not mending the rift between him and Kumble, under whose tenure Team India performed exceptionally well, even regaining the No. 1 spot in Tests.
Former India captain and coach Ajit Wadekar has come out with assessment of Kohli, criticizing the India captain for the way he handled his relationship with Kumble, even calling the Indian team a bunch of ‘losers’.
“Greatness and modesty should go along. And, in Virat’s case it is almost opposite. He should be feeling blessed to have Anil as a coach. If you are disciplined that doesn’t mean that you are not a good coach. I am sure Virat will realise soon what mistake he has made. I want to ask Kohli, how could he change his opinion in just one year? India were performing and giving positive results. Then why did he do this?. It’s a complete sign of immaturity”.
While Kohli is busy leading the team in the Caribbean tour, Kumble will resume his role as the chairman of ICC’s cricket committee. Kumble was appointed as the head coach of India a year ago, and ever since his first assignment in the West Indies, the team started fetching good results. Not many would have expected Kumble to call time so soon because his partnership with Kohli was yielding good results for the team. They performed well in West Indies, then in the long home season, and then also in the Champions Trophy where they made it to the finals. The BCCI and its selectors will now have to choose Kumble’s successor with utmost scrutiny.
