Champions League football never disappoints the football fanatics and the electrifying atmosphere at Millennium Stadium, Wales was early indications of another historic showdown.
Juventus and the defending champions Real Madrid locked horns in an epic encounter, however, it were Los Blancos who had the last laugh following 90 minutes of football of top quality.
The title holders broke the deadlock within twenty minutes when the Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo unleashed a low strike from the edge of the box that ended up into the back of the net. But Juventus, the Serie A champions, did not take long to hit back as their Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic pulled off an exquisite overhead kick that found the top right corner of the net. First half ended all square following 45 minutes of fascinating football.
Juventus were more dominant in first half. But the scenario altered since second half kick-off and Real Madrid took full control of the game. Soon they restored their lead when Casemiro’s thumping long range effort took a wicked deflection and found the back of the net. Real scored another within minutes of their second when Cristiano Ronaldo fired a first-time shot past Buffon from close range to net his second of the night. Juventus completely surrendered in second half and gave the ball away far too easily in dangerous positions. To add to their misery, substitute Juan Cuadrado was wrongly sent off following Sergio Ramos’ usual theatricals and Marco Asensio put the last nail in Juve’s coffin in closing minutes after Marcelo’s brilliant run from the left hand flank. Thus, the game ended 4-1 in favor of the Spanish giants as they now retain the trophy for back to back campaigns and register their third champions league triumph in four years span.
