Real Madrid CF began their 2016-2017 the same way they finished their 2015-16 season, and that is by winning a major European trophy by beating a Spanish opposition in the final.
A 3-2 win after extra time against Sevilla saw Los Blancos win the UEFA Super Cup earlier this season, giving Zinedine Zidane his second piece of silverware at the club, within less than a year in charge at Madrid. The finale against Sevilla was also a stepping stone for many youngsters in the Real team, as Zidane’s regular stars were mostly sidelined.
One of those players’ who took their chances to shine in the absence of Real forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale was young Spanish outlet Marco Asensio. The young midfielder managed to impress on his debut, and also scored a goal for Zidane’s team.
Asensio was signed by Madrid from Mallorca, Real managed to pick the youngster up from right under the noses of their biggest rival’s FC Barcelona. Asensio came really close to joining Barca and had agreed all the terms, but only for the move to break down in the last minute. However, right after signing the player Real decided to pack his bags and send him on loan to Espanyol, where the player scored five times in 36 games.
Before joining Real the player had scored six goals in 35 games for Real Mallorca in the second divisiom but his rise in the La Liga has been steady but relentless and amazing. Just three months into his Madrid career and Asensio has scored in four different competitions, which also included a goal in the European Super Cup finale.
During his time at Espanyol, Asensio proved that he was a very effective player from a No.10 role as well as on the left channel of the attack. His abilities from the left side is tremendous and he proved it in his debut match for Real against Sevilla in the Super Cup finale. Asensio scored the goal, after cutting inside and shooting into the top corner to mark his spectacular debut.
Real Madrid fans desperately needed a native Spanish player whom they can watch play in the whites every week and Marco Asensio was definitely the right man. It has been a really long time since The Galacticos had a fan favourite Spanish player in their ranks, the likes of Guti, Raul and Iker Casillas were part of the side at one point but that was years ago. Sergio Ramos is the last Spanish player the Madrid players could’ve cheered for every week but Asensio’s arrival at the club completely changes that scenario. His popularity at the club has also increased a lot due to fact that he was signed from the grasp or Real’s arch rival Barcelona.
Still aged just 21, Asensio proves to be a great asset for Zinedine Zidane, who considers the player as a ‘surprise weapon’ for the upcoming El Clasico against FC Barcelona.
With such amazing talent in their attacking positions, it pretty much seems like Real Madrid won’t have to sign another attacking player anytime soon. With 4 goals in 17 matches for Real, and recently scorind one against FC Bayern Munchen in the UEFA Champions League, Asensio’s long term future at Real looks bright and promises a lot for him and for the Spanish as well as the Real Madrid fans because they have real gem of a player who is more than capable of becoming a Spanish hero in the future.
