The Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have not had a good season thus far, have announced Harpreet Singh as a replacement for the injured Sarfaraz Khan for the remainder of the season. The 19-year old injured himself while training during a pre-season practice session. He hasn’t played a single game this season.
Harpreet Singh, the replacement for Sarfaraz, was ignored from the auctions after being mistaken for Harmeet Singh, a former Ranji player who was under bars for driving his car into one of the platforms of the Andheri station in Mumbai.
Harpreet had been in tremendous form before IPL auctions, ending as the highest run-getter in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He hit 211 runs in four matches for the Central Zone in the tournament, at an average of 52.75.
He has previously been part of the Pune Warriors India and the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Royal Challengers, since the start of the league, have been hit hard by the injury bug: an in form opener KL Rahul has been ruled out for the entire IPL season, the skipper Kohli had to miss out the first three matches after recuperating from a shoulder injury he sustained during the India vs Australia series. AB de Villiers also missed out the first two matches due to discomfort in his back, forcing the team to play Shane Watson as the captain.
Sarfaraz Khan is a bright young talent to have emerged from the IPL a couple of seasons ago, and he had also had been assured of a place in the playing XI with the two main batsmen injured at the start of the season. But, a leg injury in the last practice session turned out to be a big blow to the 19-year old. Harpreet hopefully can fill the void in the middle order and help RCB alter their fortunes.
