Five top strikers Liverpool should keep their eye on in Summer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has taken accountability of his failure to increase squad depth in January after failing to land his preferred targets. However, he has reiterated his intention to spend big in summer in order to add 5-6 new faces in the squad to compete at highest level.

An out-and-out striker is a major requirement with injury-plagued Daniel Sturridge is expected to leave, Divock Origi lacks consistency and Danny Ings’ progress has been hindered due to long term injury concerns. Roberto Firmino impressed as a centre-forward, but each of Liverpool’s top-six rivals got at least one prolific goal-scorer: Diego Costa for Chelsea, Sergio Aguero for Manchester City, Harry Kane for Spurs, Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal, Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Manchester United and Romelu Lukaku for Everton are enjoying a successful campaign as they are all fighting for Premier League Golden Boot. Reds might have scored the highest number of Premier League goals so far which has been scattered mostly amongst Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana, they still miss that one man who will net at least 25 goals a season. They have failed to replace Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge could not step up due to consecutive injury concerns.

Their search for a prolific goal-scorer should not be limited within Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini ( Won’t be a bad pick considering his electrifying inception of Premier League career, but he should be allowed to settle in and spend one season furthermore before being targeted), Charlie Austin, Jay Rodriguez or Shane Long. Klopp and his team should scout other leagues as well in search of a proper inclusion.

Although club legend Steven Gerrard has expressed his desire to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Liverpool colours, the Borussia Dortmund forward is not a realistic transfer target considering club’s wealth and transfer strategy. Nevertheless, there are decent strikers available in the market who are capable of matching Klopp’s requirements if he splashes cash and we have prepared a list of five such options who should be explored in summer.

5. Kasper Dolberg

Club: Ajax

Age: 19

Games Played this season: 39

Goals this season: 17

Assists this season: 6

The teenager is one of the brightest prospects of world football and has already been capped once for Denmark senior side. Klopp is aware of Dolberg’s talent and admitted his interest in the youngster:

“Who doesn’t know Kasper Dolberg? You can’t play at Ajax without being noticed. Kasper Dolberg has a very great future. He is a fantastic player.”

But Liverpool must look for an experienced and proven goal-scorer who is doing it consistently in a top football league. They already have one potential youngster in form of Divock Origi. Klopp is expected to look for an experienced resource.

 4. Timo Werner

Club: RB Leipzig

Age: 21

Games Played this season: 23

Goals this season: 14

Assists this season: 4

Klopp has vast experience in Bundesliga and knows the market better than anybody in Premier League. The 21-year old German youth international made a move to Bundesliga new boys Leipzig from Stuttgart and has been in an excellent run of form with 14 goals from 23 outings. They are currently second in the league table and Werner is enjoying a dream run in their fairytale campaign.

3. Andrea Belotti

Club: Torino FC

Age: 23

Games Played this season: 27

Goals this season: 24

Assists this season: 3

The new Serie A sensation is currently the top scorer of the league and upgraded his form of last season for Il Toro. Amidst the interests from Chelsea and Arsenal, Torino president Urbano Cairo is playing hardball and slapped a £86 million price-tag on his star forward. However, no European football might force Torino to sell Belotti at a much lower price. Liverpool must sniff around in order to acquire his services.

2. Mauro Icardi

Club: Internazionale

Age: 24

Games Played this season: 33

Goals this season: 22

Assists this season: 8

The Argentine international fits Klopp’s profile as he is young as well as dynamic and currently having his fourth productive campaign with Inter Milan. He is been slapped to a £43 million price tag last year and his performance this season will attract several top sides. Liverpool have to launch an ambitious bid for the attacker.

1. Alexandre Lacazette

Club: Olympic Lyon

Age: 25

Games Played this season: 34

Goals this season: 28

Assists this season: 3

The Frenchman has been linked with Liverpool previously and his consistency since past four campaigns for his boyhood side is magnificent. His excellence has drawn the attention of several top outfits including Liverpool. However, Lyon have slapped a £60 mil price-tag for Lacazette and we will see if Jurgen Klopp breaks the bank to land this top-notch goal-getter.

special mention:

Kylian Mbappé of Monaco is having an outstanding campaign with 16 goals in 30 outings. The 18 years old French youth international is playing a key part in Monaco’s prolific campaign as they are currently top of Ligue 1 with three points clear of defending champions Paris St. Germain.
