The Gunners came from a goal down (0-1) in the first half to beat the host side Preston North End 1-2 in a highly contested game.
Arsenal needed an immediate response from Ramsey just after the intermission to draw the game level at 1-1. Giroud scored to seal the win towards the end as a repeat game looked likely. It was a game were some individual performances took Arsenal to the next round after an early scare in the game.

Had a moderate game between the sticks but was beaten a couple of time in goal as he was widely exposed by Arsenal’s defensive set up in the match.
AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES 6.0
A mixed performance from the youngster in defence. Made a couple of wrong and inexperience decisions in the game but showed character and guile to compete and recover well in his position in the game.
SHKODRAN MUSTAFI 6.0
The German returning from injury must do better in the next game as Arsenal continues to wrestle with opposition at the back. Good strike in search of his first Arsenal goal.
GABRIEL PAULISTA 6.0
The Brazilian defender was helpful although Arsenal’s defence faltered on occasion. Should have done better alongside his partner (Mustafi) for the first goal they conceded.
NACHO MONREAL 6.0
The Spanish left back was very good going forward but was found wanting defensively as he allowed the opposing forward to get a clear shot at goal.
GRANIT XHAKA 6.5
The talented deep lying midfield player was calm and deliberate in his incisive passes as he was caught for a foul on occasion. Showed maturity and composure in midfield to build up play when Arsenal needed it most.
AARON RAMSEY 6.5
The Welsh man was missing in the match especially in the first period as Preston seized the initiative but was on hand to give the Gunners a life-line with a superb strike and an important one for an equalizer.
ALEX IWOBI 7.0
The Nigerian was good going forward as he tried to boss Arsenal into the game with some incisive movement. Held the ball up well to set up Ramsey for Arsenal’s equalizer just after the intermission.
ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN 5.5
The forward was not get going when Arsenal needed him in the first half but showed good work rate to help out in defensive duties.
OLIVIER GIROUD 7.5
The forward showed experience and determination in the game to win it for Arsenal after been initially denied by the lines man. Great link up play along with forward Lucas Perez as it proved decisive in the winning goal.
LUCAS PEREZ 6.5
The forward showed good link up with Giroud going forward. Worked hard in the game and was on hand to set up Giroud with a back-heel for the winning goal of the match.
DANNY WELBECK 5.0
Fresh from injury added the much needed jibe and fresh legs to the side as Preston succumbed at the death. Did well to test the opposing goal with a decent strike which was parried off for a corner-kick.

Came in for the youngster (Ainsley Maitland-Niles) to add more bodies in defence and fresh legs as Arsenal saw out the minutes for a win.

Made a late cameo along with Holding but had a little time to bump forward into attack as Arsenal solidified their foot in the game.
