Manchester United will begin their title defence this weekend when Championship side Reading will come to Old Trafford for the third round fixture of the FA Cup.
The Red Devils will welcome one of their ex-player Jaap Stam to Old Trafford who won the treble with Manchester United in 1999 but this time as the manager of the opposite team Reading.
After a difficult start to life in Manchester, Jose Mourinho appears to finally have a hold on United’s development under his direction. They are in sublime form recently, unbeaten in the last 13 matches in all competitions and 7 wins in a trot. However, the Red Devils manager has stated that he will give rest to some key players and rotate the squad as per requirement. On the other hand, Championship side Reading currently sit third in the Championship and have won their last three league matches. On paper, this could come as a very easy task for Manchester United, however, an inspired Japp Stam’s side could make unexpected upset at the Old Trafford if the tie is not taken seriously.
Manchester United will be without their only defender Eric Bailey who is out because of his International duty at the AFCON competition with Ivory Coast. Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw are likely to return to the squad after missing some weeks due to injury. Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin both will not take any part in any competition currently as both of them handed the club a transfer request.
There are not any notable absentee for the Dutch Man’s side as both Paul McShane and Jordan Obita returned to the first team in their last game against Bristol City, strengthening Stam’s options ahead of the tie.
Head to Head Stats:
Manchester United have won five of their last six meetings with Reading. The Royals’ record at the Old Trafford has been piss poor, as their only win came here at the 1927 and since then they have lost 10 out 14 occasions here.
