It was a testing trip for Liverpool and they ended up drawing the game 2-2 against Sunderland.

Two games in less than 48 hours time were indeed a tough test for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

A win against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve followed by a tricky away fixture over struggling Sunderland at Stadium of Light was a crucial outing for the Reds in order to keep pushing for their title hope and close the gap with leaders Chelsea. But Liverpool failed to take the advantage and only managed a 2-2 draw despite leading twice in the game.

Liverpool took an early lead via Daniel Sturridge who headed home from Lovren’s delivery on 20th minute mark. But the lead did not last long as Sunderland were awarded a penalty within 5 minutes when Didier Ndong was fouled by Ragnar Klavan inside the box. Veteran Jermain Defoe made no mistake to convert from the spot and equalize for the Black Cats. He could have doubled his tally within moments but Liverpool custodian Simon Mignolet came up with a massive one-to-one save to deny the Englishman. First half ended in 1-1.

Fatigue was a reason behind Liverpool’s sluggish movements and passing inaccuracy. Sunderland waited patiently for counter attacks and one penalty appeal was controversially denied by referee Anthony Taylor when Januzaj’s shot struck Emre Can’s arm inside the box.

Liverpool gradually came back into the game and restored the lead when Sadio Mane tapped in from Alberto Moreno’s well taken corner. However, they failed to keep hold of it once again as Mane’s bizarre handball from Larsson’s freekick cost them another penalty. Defoe stepped up and coolly finished it into the back of the net. The Reds’ kept on pushing for a winner for last 10 minutes but failed to beat past Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone who made around 12 saves throughout. The game ended 2-2 resulting in a major setback for Klopp’s army in their opening fixture of 2017 and a massive point for David Moyes in order to survive the relegation scare.
