The last Premier League fixture of 2016 was no short of excitement when Liverpool welcomed Manchester City at Anfield in a titanic encounter. Both the teams locked horns after securing three back to back victories and were in high spirits to register a fourth win in a row. Earlier, Chelsea won against Stoke City and the Gunners will host struggling Crystal Palace tomorrow. Thus, the game turned out to be a must-win fixture for both outfits and the Reds edged past the Citizens by 1-0.

It was Liverpool who drew the first blood when Georginio Wijnaldum’s thumping header from Adam Lallana’s cross beat Claudio Bravo and ended into the back of the net within ten minutes of the game. They kept control for the remaining minutes of the first half with their counter-pressing football. City, despite having greater possession, could not find a shot on target.

But they came back stronger in the second half and the Reds had to sit deep to defend the attacking threats. Liverpool, who have been vulnerable at back, showed great defensive resilience and tracked down every single run of Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure thus denied them to create any goal scoring threat. Wijnaldum’s early goal proved to be the decider and Liverpool restored the six points gap with leaders Chelsea at mid-season. City, on the other hand, are now 10 points behind the Blues and only two points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal who have a chance to climb up to the third spot with a home victory over the Eagles tomorrow.
