Despite registering a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Anfield on New Year’s Eve, Liverpool have no time to celebrate the occasion as they now have to rush to Sunderland to play against them in less than 48 hrs time.
The Reds are currently second in the table with six points lower than the league leaders Chelsea. Sunderland, on the other hand, are deep into the drop zone with 14 points following a shambolic 4-1 defeat against newly promoted Burnley. Fatigue will be the biggest concern for the Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, whereas, David Moyes have no option but to upturn the misfortune at Stadium of Light before it gets too late for the Black Cats.

Sunderland have a long list of injury concerns with Duncan Watmore and Paddy McNair out for the entire campaign with anterior cruciate ligament injuries. Jan Kirchhoff and Lee Cattermole are out for three months furthermore with their respective cartilage damage and hip surgery. Young Custodian Jordan Pickford is ruled out for two more months with anterior cruciate ligament sprain. Youngser Lynden Gooch is out too with ankle ligament injury. Lamine Kone, Victor Anichebe and Jason Denayer are doubtful for the Liverpool clash with hip injury, hamstring strain and a knock. Right-back Billy Jones is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow of the campaign against Burnley.
Joel Matip and Philippe Coutinho, though recovering steadily, will not be risked against the Black Cats. Youngster Marko Grujic is out with tendon injury. Skipper Jordan Henderson is a major doubt after picking up a heel injury against Manchester City. Danny Ings is out for the second consecutive campaign after an unfortunate meniscus tear.

Moyes will miss many of his key men against Liverpool. But veteran Jermain Defoe, who scored 20 goals during the previous calendar year, will test the Liverpool backline more often than the Anfield fixture. Also, former Liverpool forward Fabio Borini is expected to start the game who scored a stunning long ranger against Manchester United on Boxing Day.
