India reach the final of the Under 19 Asia Cup after a convincing victory over Afghanistan on Tuesday in Colombo. The young Indian colts put up a laudable show in both departments to notch a 77 run victory over the emerging cricketing nation.
The odds were high and a spirited Afghan side fought but in the end India always were a step ahead and prevailed.
India won the toss and elected to bat and put a good total on the board.
India started fast and put up a decent opening partnership of 40. Opener Himanshu Rana went on to score a hundred to post India’s total up to 250. Both Shubham Gill and Abhishek Sharma contributed with the centurion and India were moving towards a 300 plus total, only not due to a collapse at the latter stage of their innings. India lost their last 6 wickets for just 34 runs and ended up being all out on 294, which itself was a good score. Naveen-ul-Haq was the pick of the bowlers for the Afghans as he picked up 5 wickets.
In reply, Afghans stuttered from the beginning as they lost a couple of wickets early. They were tottering at 46/4 and never recovered from those early blows. Indians bowled a tight, disciplined line and the minnows couldn’t cope with that. Nishar Wahdat and Shamsurrahman put up a fight as the duo added a valiant 84 runs partnership. The former scored a well compiled 75 before getting out and in the end they were far behind the run rate and ended up managing 217 for 7 after playing out their 50 overs quota. Nagarkoti, Thakur and Chahar all picked up couple of wickets each and both Chahar and pacer Shiva Singh were economical.
The win takes India to the Under 19 Asia Cup final and they will meet either Sri Lanka or Bangladesh in the all important encounter.
