Benfica legend Antonio Veloso has seemed to confirm Victor Lindelof’s move to Manchester United by mentioning that the club are sorry to let the defender go.
The Swedish international Victor Lindelof has risen as the main target for Jose Mourinho prior to the January transfer window and with the executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, hopeful of buying the central defender in January for less than his release clause of around €45m (£37.8m) Mourinho is ready to reinforce his defensive options for future. The 22-year-old centre-back was spotted by Mourinho subsequent to getting the attention at Mourinho’s former club Benfica. And if the reports are to be trusted, Lindelof has already also told his companions that he is ready to move at the Old Trafford.
The 6.4-inch defender moved to Benfica for just €50,000 when he was signed from Vasteras in Sweden in 2012. However, since he has slowly cemented his place from the B-side to become a first-team regular of Benfica and has impressed everyone with his defensive strengths this season. The defender currently earns €10,000 a week and his deal will expire at 2020.
And now the Portuguese Champions legend Antonio Veloso who made over 419 appearances for the club over a 15-year period has seemed to affirm Lindelof is joining Manchester United.
‘It’s no surprise to me that Lindelof is being transferred,’ said Veloso.
‘I just did not know if it would be now or at the end of the season, since there was strong interest from Manchester United and other clubs.
‘He is an important player in Benfica, but the team has other high-quality ones like Jardel or Lisandro, and does not lose.
‘But we are sorry to see him leave, of course.’
The Swedish player’s agent confirmed interests from several European clubs earlier in December however, did not particularly disclosed which club it was. But now with their club legend addressing the situation, it is now just a matter of time before the deal finalises.
It is reported that the Manchester United target will play his last game for the Portuguese club this Wednesday before heading to Manchester next month for a speculated £32mil with add-ons and with Eric Bailly out for a month at the Africa Cup of Nations, it could be a great move to have the defender for the contention at the back.
