Two upbeat Merseyside outfits are set to face off in a derby encounter on Monday night when Liverpool will visit Goodison Park to contest Everton in the prestigious Merseyside derby.
Everton, who are unbeaten at home since March, are back in winning ways since their massive victory over Arsenal in midweek. Liverpool, too, are back on track with a neat 0-3 away victory against Middlesbrough after two back to back stumbles. The Reds have lost only once in last 19 Merseyside derbies, however, a draw at Goodison might not be a great result for Liverpool this time considering they are already nine points behind league leaders Chelsea with the Toffees’ game in hand. Everton boss Ronald Koeman has pointed out about their miserable run against local rivals and is determined to beat the neighbors in order to keep pushing for a European spot.
Everton vs Liverpool Injuries and suspensions:
Everton will have a couple of significant absentees: Yannick Bolasie is out for rest of the campaign with ACL injury, whereas Phil Jagielka will miss this fixture after a sending off against Arsenal in previous fixture. Also, Muhamed Besic is still a few months away following his ACL injury and Arouna Kone is uncertain due to lack of match fitness.
Liverpool are boosted by the news of Daniel Sturridge and Emre Can’s return to full training who might be included in the matchday squad against the Toffees. But Joel Matip’s return remains a big question mark as Klopp hinted not to rush and risk him for the derby. Philippe Coutinho might return to light training this week but still at least a few weeks away since his return from a knee ligament injury that he sustained against Sunderland. Marko Grujic is unavailable with tendon injury and Danny Ings is ruled out for rest of the campaign with another unfortunate knee injury.
Everton vs Liverpool Probable LineUps:
Everton vs Liverpool Key Players:
All eyes will be on star striker Romelu Lukaku who has a great scoring record against the Reds. Also, James McCarthy’s inclusion in midfield alongside Idrissa Gana Gueye has strengthened the Toffees’ midfield.
Liverpool will rely on Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino who are in majestic form so far in this campaign. Also, Divock Origi might be sniffing for another goal to net six goals in six consecutive games.
Everton vs Liverpool Last Meeting:
Their last meeting at Goodison ended in a 1-1 draw when Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Danny Ings’ goal. The game resulted in the sack of Brendan Rodgers and appointment of Jurgen Klopp as new Liverpool manager.
“It’s not good, one win out of 19. It’s time to beat them.” – Ronald Koeman
“I am not in doubt about our quality, but I know we’ll need everything to get something from Goodison Park. That’s how it should be.” – Jurgen Klopp
