After a disastrous 3-4 defeat over Bournemouth last weekend, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was determined to get back to winning ways against West Ham United who did a league double and finished above Liverpool last term.
However, things have been quite opposite so far for Slaven Bilic’s men as the Hammers only managed three victories and started the game being in drop zone with only 12 points from 14 outings. But the Reds could not capitalize on their home advantage as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Liverpool got an early breakthrough within five minutes into the game when Adam Lallana scored from Sadio Mane’s pass. But the lead did not last long as Dimitri Payet drew level on 27th minute mark from a free-kick. Though it was a well struck effort, Reds custodian Loris Karius could have done better with his positioning.
The Hammers got a lead against the run of play twelve minutes later when Michail Antonio exploited wrong outing of Karius and finished from close range. Reds kept on pushing for an equalizer and a penalty appeal was controversially turned down by referee Mark Clattenberg on course of half-time.
The Reds came back stronger in the second half and soon they equalized within a couple of minutes via Divock Origi following a howler from Darren Randolph who failed to grip Mane’s cross.
It was one-sided since then as West Ham sat deep happily with a point. However, Randolph came to the rescue when he denied a stunning long range effort of the Reds skipper Jordan Henderson. Liverpool came close for a few more occasions but failed to find the back of the net. It ended all-square at Anfield as the result took West Ham out of bottom three and put the Reds six points below league leaders Chelsea and a point clear of fourth placed Manchester City.
