Jose Mourinho has spoken of his appreciation for Manchester United winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan and said he is hopeful about his quick recovery.
Mkhitaryan suffered an injury after being fouled by Danny Rose in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Spurs, with the Armenian scoring the winner. It was the Armenian’s fourth Man of the match performance this season after missing nearly missed two months out of action with an injury. The midfielder has scored two goals and assisted further till now but was subject to a heartbreak against Tottenham when he was forced to leave the field on a stretcher because of that injury.
Speaking on Monday about the incident during a press conference at Carrington complex, Mourinho said he had feared firstly a lengthy absence was likely as it looked a serious injury however to the relief of the Manchester United manager, the midfielder will likely to miss two matches, two away games at Crystal Palace on Wednesday and West Brom on Saturday.
“Hopefully a few matches out of action will not mean the end of this development,” Mourinho said.
“Hopefully he can play Christmas. We believe it is possible. When I saw him on the stretcher I thought was more serious. When I saw the tackle on TV I was a bit scared.
“It is a pity because he is going to miss matches in his best period.”
Mourinho also expressed that he has nothing but appreciation for Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the way he dealt his exclusion from the squad and praised the 27-year-old’s attitude.
“We bought him because I asked the club to do it, because I liked the player and analysed him,” said the former Chelsea boss.
“So it would be extra frustrating for me if everything went wrong. But he needed a period of adaptation, at every level, and in that period he was a great professional.
“Maybe another guy in his position would look for excuses and blame the manager, blame the pitch, blame the weather, blame something else, like many players do these days. But he was quiet, closed his mouth, worked really hard, waited for his opportunity and was playing really well now.”
Manchester United is currently sixth in the table and sixth points below than fourth Placed Manchester City.
