Mexican outfit Club de Futbol America beat Korea’s Jeonbuk Motors in the quarter finals to advance into the semis of the FIFA Club world cup that is held in Japan. The CONCACAF champions beat the Asian outfit 2-1 and will face Real Madrid in the semis.
The match started in an entertaining fashion as both the teams had almost equal possession and both were creating chances. America had a clear cut chance but Romero couldn’t convert it. On the other hand, the Korean club took a surprise lead on 23rd minute through Bo-Kyung Kim, his left footer beating the America keeper Moises Munoz. Ricardo La Volpe’s side went into the break trailing, but changed their gameplay on the 2nd half.
The Mexicans continued their dominant display in the early part of the second half and got their reward on 58th minute when Argentine Silvio Romero’s header equalized from a Miguel Arroyo pass. Romero grabbed another goal 16 minutes from time to give the Mexican outfit a well deserved lead. Los Aguillas held on the final minutes and have registered a place in the semi finals where they will face the giants from Madrid.
“This was a night I’ve dreamed about,” Romero said. “To be able to score two goals in such a big tournament I feel like I’ve achieved something big,” clearly shows the happiness of the Argentine.
“We were able to exceed the results of last year,” said Club America coach Ricardo La Volpe. “Mexican football is competitive and I think we were able to demonstrate that.”
Club America were crowned CONCACAF champions for the second year in a row in April, after beating compatriots Tigres UANL 2-0 away and 2-1 at home in the two-legged final, the club where French striker Andre Pierre Gignac plays.
