Champions League Gameweek 6: Review and Talking Points

The end-to-end match between Real Madrid and Bourssia Dortmund sums up the Champions League week.


The UEFA Champions League group stages ended last night after some thrilling matches and some jaw dropping results. 16 teams have qualified for the knock out stages and 8 third placed teams have moved to the Europa League, as the bottom placed 8 teams have nowhere to go anymore for this season.

It was another intriguing final gameweek as there was a lot in offering for some of the clubs. Let’s have a look what happened around Europe in the final gameweek and the final verdicts.

Group A:

Arsenal secured a thumping victory over Basel, 4-1, as the Gunners were also crowned group winners. Lucas Perez, Arsenal’s new boy scored a debut hattrick to give the Gunners a good victory.

PSG squandered their chances to be group winners as they were held at home by Ludogorets, the Bulgarian side had the lead until Di Maria scored a late equaliser. Ludogorets continue their European adventure as they will be a part of Europa League.

Group B:

Napoli beat Benfica at Portugal to secure the top spot in their group. Jose Callejon and Mertens gave them a two goal cushion, Raul Jimenez pulled one back but Napoli held toa 2-1 victory. Both teams though move to the next round.

Besiktas failed miserably in Ukraine as Dynamo Kyiv scored 6 pass them. Besiktas move to the Europa League and despite the win, Kyiv’s journey ends here.

Group C:

Barcelona won 4-0 against Monchengladbach. Arda Turan scored a hattrick as Catalans storm through to the next round. The German club now have to try their luck in the Europa League.

Manchester City were held at home 1-1 by Celtic, despite the draw, City advance to the knock out stages.

Group D:

Atletico Madrid lost against Bayern 1-0, but still the Madrid side advance as group winners and Bayern follow them.

Rostov created history as they move to the Europa League after PSV failed to beat them at home. The Dutch side disappointingly are out of Europe.

Group E:

Bayer Leverkusen beat Monaco 3-0 and both the teams qualify for the next round as the French outfit advance as group champions.

Spurs won at home as they beat CSKA 3-1. The English side though are unable to qualify for the next round and move to the Europa League.

Group F:

Legia won 1-0 at home against Sporting to secure their Europa League fates.

Real Madrid failed to hold a two goal advantage as Dortmund struck late to make it all squares and secure the top spot in the group. Benzema scored a brace for the Spanish side, while Aubameyang and Reus scored for the German side.

Group G:

Porto secured their Champions League journey after a thumping 5-0 victory over Leicester. The Portuguese side absolutely demolished the Premier League champions, who still advance as group champions. Andre Silva scored a brace and Mexican Jesus Corona a stunning volley.

Kobenhavn won 2-0 away against Brugge and move to the Europa League.

Group H:

Lyon failed to qualify for the knock out phase as they failed to beat Sevilla at home. The game ended 0-0 and ended Lyon’s hopes to qualify. The French side though are eligible to play in the Europa League as they secured 3rd spot.

Juventus eased pass Zagreb 2-0 to advance as the group winners. Higuain and Rugani scored the goals for the Italian giants.
