Hardworking, consistent, versatile and a complete midfielder, Xabi Alonso is regarded as one of the best player’s of this generation. Gifted with great technique, brilliant vision and passing abilities Alonso is still considered as one of the best midfielder’s of the game.
Alonso is the master of long balls and is a veteran in midfield who possesses great passing abilities; he is also an effective set piece taker with great shooting abilities. Over the years Alonso has scored numerous outstanding goals, thus let us take a look at his 10 best strikes so far.
No. 10: Real Madrid (2) vs FC Barcelona (2) – Supercopa de Espana, 2012
We start off with one of the most significant goal’s in Alonso’s Real Madrid career. Trailing 2-1 against arch rivals Barcelona in the finale, Real were desperate to score an equalizing goal. The Barca defence was scrambling and had a hard time, after Pepe received the ball from a Mesut Ozil corner and passed it onto Alonso, who then calmly hit the ball which beat Victor Valdes and ended up in the lower bottom right corner and equalized for Real.
No. 9: Liverpool FC (3) vs AC Milan (3), – UEFA Champions League, 2005
This goal has to be one of the most important goal’s in Alonso’s career. One of the most historic champions league final’s ever, played between Milan and Liverpool in 2005. The Rossoneri went into the half time break 3-0 and it seemed like it was all set and done for the Merseyside club, until Steven Gerrard and co. decided to make a historic comeback in the second half. Within minutes of the restart Liverpool captain, Gerrard scored the first goal, followed by a brilliant long range goal by Vladimir Smicer. With LFC trailing 3-2 an equalizer was definitely possible and in the 59th minute Gerrard was taken down by Gattuso in the box and Liverpool were awarded a penalty, stepped up Xabi Alonso who’s penalty was saved by Milan keeper Dida but the rebound was scored from a very tight angle by the Spaniard and Liverpool’s comeback was complete.
No.8: Venezuela (0) vs Spain (3)- Friendly Match, 2011
Another classic free kick Alonso added to his collection when he hit this thunderbolt against Venezuela in 2011, first beating the wall and then beating the Venezuela keeper the ball found its way to the bottom left corner.
No.7: Real Madrid (2) vs Santos Laguna (1) – World Football Challenge, 2012
Alonso scored this goal from well outside the box, the Spanish midfielder’s shot was so powerful that it went through the net and gave Real Madrid the lead.
No. 6: Spain (3) vs Republic of South Africa (2) – Confederations Cup, 2009
One of the best free kick’s of Alonso’s career. This was a very thrilling match, with Spain scoring a second goal in the 88th minute it seemed like La Roja were on their way to win the match until South Africa’s Katlego Mphela scored a spectacular 25 yard free kick deep into stoppage time. In a very nervy extra time, Alonso stepped up to take a free kick for Spain and perfectly nailed it into the bottom corner.
No.5: Liverpool FC (2) vs Watford FC (0) – Barclays Premier League, 2006
Much like his goal against Arsenal in 2004, Alonso did the same against The Hornets, Alonso hit the ball first time from outside the box and it found its way into the bottom left corner. Trademark Xabi Alonso.
No.4: Liverpool FC (2) vs Arsenal FC (1) – Barclays Premier League, 2004
This was another classic goal scored by Xabi Alonso. After a switch of play and a brilliant combination by his fellow Liverpool midfielders, Steven Gerrard played a through ball for Alonso who’s thunderous shot from outside the box beat the Gunners keeper and went into the top left corner of the net.
No.3: Valencia (2) vs Real Sociedad (2) – 2002, La Liga
This was a very beautiful goal by a young Xabi Alonso who was back then playing for Real Sociedad. Xabi wasted little time on this one as he hit the ball first time and it swung and ended up in the Valencia net to complete a brilliant volley goal by the Spaniard.
No.2: FC Bayern Munich (1) vs SV Darmstadt 98 (0) – DFB Pokal, 2015
After the Darmstadt defence headed the ball out from a corner, Alonso received it with his right foot and hit a brilliant shot to score a great goal for the German champions, this goal by far remains the best goal Alonso has scored for Bayern so far. Alonso also scored a similar goal in the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen in 2016.
No.1 Liverpool FC (2) vs Newcastle United (0) – Barclays Premier League, 2006
Simply one of the best goal’s in Alonso’s career and definitely one of the best ever scored in Anfield. After winning the ball in his own half, Alonso noticed Newcastle keeper Harper off his line and shot the ball from 70 yards out and put the ball into the corner of the net and what made it more special was, this goal was scored at the Kop end.
