FC Bayern München defender Mats Hummels has revealed that he was “very close” to signing for Manchester United.
The Germany international nearly moved to Old Trafford when both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were in control, before coming back to Bayern Munich in the summer.
The 27-year-old came back to the Bavarian outfit, a club in which he put in 14 years before a permanent move to Dortmund this May and has played profoundly for the previous champions so far this season. The 27-year old put in 8 years with Borussia Dortmund, winning the Bundesliga twice with the German side in 2010-11 and 2011-12 before a switch to Bayern.
While speaking ahead of an impressive fixture against La Liga side Atletico Madrid, the German defender has asserted that Louis van Gaal was quick to convey Mats Hummels to Manchester United, however, a move to the Premier League didn’t materialise and it would be difficult to play in England now.
Hummels also states that there was likewise enthusiasm from LaLiga powerhouses Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, but the most solid proposal arrived from Manchester United.
“Yes, [a deal was close],” Hummels told the Daily Mail When asked if a deal to sign for United in 2014 was close.
“Yes, yes, yes. It was close. Very close.
“There were talks, several times in the last few years. They were the offers. I had England or one of the three big Spanish clubs.
“The Spanish interest was loose, loose offers. I don’t like it that way. Nothing got close like the one from England.
“Van Gaal wanted me but he wasn’t the only one. It is getting difficult for me now to play in England. I’m 28 next month and I’ve signed here for five years.”
The star defender also expressed high praise for his German compatriot and Former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp and said he wants Klopp to be successful at Liverpool and will always cheer for him.
“We wouldn’t have had that success with another coach in Dortmund. ‘I can’t say I am a Liverpool fan, I don’t have a club in England. I just want Klopp to win. If he was coach of another team, I would support them. I cheer for Klopp!”
You don’t know what will be there in the future but looks like if anyone can bring the German at the Premier League it is likely his former boss .
