Clinical Chelsea punished a Wasteful Manchester City 3-1 on the counter as the teams full of class players and two world class managers locked horns. It was a first face off between Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola.
Passion merchant Conte vs usually composed Guardiola was a treat to watch, though a couple of dubious decisions by the referee Anthony Taylor, Sergio Aguero’s lunge at David Luiz, Fernandinho’s push on the throat on Fabregas, Guardiola’s animations towards the referee added another dimension, maybe ugly to the game.
Conte was spot on with his tactics, usual 3-4-3. Whereas, Guardiola tinkered with his usual formation, he also fielded 3-4-3, which was sometimes getting reverted to 3-5-1-1. In the first half, Guardiola’s tactics pinned Chelsea backwards, had Kevin De Bruyne not missed a sitter and the decisions by the referee gone to City’s favour, the story could have been different altogether. But, in social media, the winner is the boss and the loser faces unprecedented flaks.
Conte post-match reaction: Conte admitted Chelsea were lucky and his players did well to control the nerves when the temperature soared.
”We were lucky at the start of the second half because there was one crossbar, and also a good save from Thibaut kept the result at 1-0.”
”It’s a big win and a big result against a really strong team, with the quality of players in their squad I think it’s the most complete in this league. For this reason, I am pleased with the result, and with the players. They showed me great character.”
”We found great strength to score the goal to draw, and then to score the second goal and the third goal.”
”We have to wait for the first part of the season because we know this league is not easy. Now we are playing very well. We are playing good football, we have good confidence, but it’s important to continue to work and improve. There is room to improve.”
Guardiola Post-match Reaction:
“I say congratulations to Chelsea, but I’m proud of the we played, and we cannot forget against which team we played. We created more chances than we did in the games against Crystal Palace and Burnley.”
“They had few chances but they scored from them.”
“In the boxes we are not strong enough… especially here at home. The opponents, when they arrive they score, when we arrive sometimes not, mentally that’s tough.”
On the brawls, Guardiola apologized on behalf of Aguero and Fernandinho. He said:“It’s a pity it finished like this, I don’t like that, I apologise for what happened.”
“We didn’t win because we missed a lot of chances not because of the referee.”

Antonio Conte inherited a dead team, and has built them into monsters. Without any noise or any attack at fellow managers or referees!
