PSG boss confirm Barcelona Interest for Brazilian Defender

PSG boss Unai Emery has confirmed Barcelona wanted to sign Brazilian defender Marquinhos this summer.

Marquinhos, who was signed from AS Roma in 2013 for a fee of €31.4 million at just 19 years of age, was linked with Barcelona among other clubs but ended up staying in Paris Saint German. Marquinhos is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in the world today, and it is no surprise that a club like Barcelona were interested in signing him.

Emery has now confirmed there was interest from the Blaugrana over the summer but feels the player made the right decision to stick with the Ligue 1 champions.

“Barcelona did try to sign Marquinhos this summer. But he is grateful to PSG for the opportunity to play at such a big club, he said, according to El Pais

“The opportunity to play for Barcelona might appeal to him, but he respects what PSG has given him and chose to stay here. That also says a lot about a complete player.”

The former Sevilla boss also said Marquinhos still had room to grow into a leadership role but admitted the Brazilian is a top class professional.

“He is a top footballer. In addition to his technical qualities, he listens to instructions,” he said.

“He is very concentrated, does what you ask of him. He can still improve in terms of leadership.”

Emery also heaped a lot of praise for another star player of his team, Veratti and admitted Marquinhos and the Italian is the core of the squad.

“He’s an impulsive young man and that’s partly what makes him such a good player,” Emery said of Verratti.

“He gives his heart and soul. Against Rennes, on 85 minutes Di María put in through for what would have been his second goal of the game but he arrived a fraction too late.

“He was flat out on the floor when the keeper released the ball quickly to start a counter-attack; he jumped up and sprinted back to press the rivals. Verratti and Marquinhos are the soul of PSG”.
