Veteran Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made it clear that he does not have any regret over his team selection following a 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the quarter final of the EFL Cup.
The Frenchman has stated that his team looked like that they were not capable of scoring as his side have been thrashed out of the EFL Cup in the quarter final round.
Goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand secured the 2-0 victory for the Saints as well as confirmed the elimination of the home side from the tournament. This victory has let the visiting team to feature in the semi finals of the EFL Cup after 30 long years.
Wenger made 10 changes in his starting XI and has been rewarded with the worst possible outcome being knocked out from the competition in their home ground.
“It was one of those nights where it looked like we can play for two hours and not score a goal”, the Frenchman declared.
The Arsenal manager has slammed his boys for not scoring goals. He said, “We didn’t have enough urgency in the first half. We were weak in some departments and we paid for that”. He has also defended his decision of selecting the controversial team. “I have no regrets over selection, I regret we lost the game”, he added.
On the other hand, Southampton manager Claude Puel also made 8 changes in his team. But his side have successfully managed to prove their values as the manager found himself delighted in the interview afterwards.
“I enjoy this win for all of the squad and for the fans, because it’s a good answer to keep all of our possibilities in every competition”, Puel mentioned. “It was an objective of the team to qualify for the semi-finals after the winter.”
Puel is very pleased with the roles of the players he selected and he has not forgotten to praise them as he has mentioned, “It was a strong game, with good solidarity. We moved the team at the start with different players and the answer from them was fantastic”.
The Southampton man in charge has stated that he is very happy to qualify for the semi final of the EFL cup and his side will definitely try to utilize this opportunity. “We played a very good game and to qualify for the next round is very important. We now get to play in a semi-final and that’s great for the players”, he added.
Southampton will now face the red side from the Merseyside Liverpool in the semi final clash in the EFL Cup. Previously in the last season, Liverpool had tasted a huge 6-1 victory over the same opponents. So, this time the Saints will try their best to erase their past humiliation.
