Transfer: Manchester United to sign Benfica defender to solve defensive crisis

According to reports in Portugal, Benfica centre-half Victor Lindelof is said to be attracting admiring glances from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Portuguese media outlet O Jogo has reported that Manchester United are in the driving seat and have made initial contact over a move for the 22-year-old in the winter transfer window.

Chelsea, Paris Saint German and Inter Milan is also said to be keeping their tabs open for the Swedish defender.

Lindelof, 22 began his professional career at Vasteras SK in the lower levels of Swedish football, before marking appearance for Benfica as a 17-year-old in December 2011. After an underlying contest, Lindelof turned into a key individual from Benfica’s defence and has effectively shown up for the Portuguese side this season in total 17 times.

The agent of potential Manchester United target also accepted the rumours and has said ‘there is no smoke without fire’ in regards to speculation over the player’s future.

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen in Sweden, his agent, Hasan Cetinkaya said: ‘I don’t want to comment on various clubs but there is concrete interest from some of the biggest in Europe.

‘Vigge really enjoys it at Benfica, at the same time, as I have said before, there is no smoke without fire when it comes to that many clubs are interested in him, but Victor is focused on Benfica.’

It is rumoured that the Portuguese side are solid from their stance of asking a whopping£25million fee to let go of their Swedish prodigy as he has been touted to become as one of the best defenders in Europe.

In a recent interview, Manchester United star striker also touted the defender as one of the best and suggested that the big defender can play in any of the top European clubs.

He said: “I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing.

“Is he good enough for United? I think he’s good enough for the big clubs out there. It’s up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him.”

Manchester United is keen to boost his defensive options and is also reported to been monitoring a lot of options like Burnley’s Michael Keane, Southampton’s Van Dijk.
