Transfer: Jose Mourinho looking to bring former Manchester United player to Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be plotting a shocking transfer sweep for former Manchester United midfielder Danny Drinkwater in January.

The 26-year-old played a key role in Leicester City’s shock Premier League title success last season. And according to reports, Mourinho wants the former United academy star to return to Old Trafford.

After splashing £150 million on Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan while Zlatan Ibrahimovic came in on a free Jose Mourinho has again continued to plough more funds into new recruits. Mourinho believes Drinkwater’s presence in the United midfield could improve the defensive stability of the team and also would allow more freedom for world record signing Paul Pogba.

The 26-year-old along with N’Golo Kante formed the formidable central midfield of Claudio Ranieri’s title-winning side last season and made 35 appearances scoring two goals.

The Manchester-born midfielder learned his trade in the club’s youth academy and played for the Red Devils’ U-18s and reserve team but he couldn’t cut into the senior side and was sent out on loan to Huddersfield, Cardiff, Watford and Barnsley during his time at Manchester United before joining The Foxes on a permanent deal in January 2012 for a nominal fee.

The 26-year-old attracted widespread interest following the Foxes’ title-winning season, before opting to pen a new long-term contract at the King Power Stadium last month, keeping him at the club until 2021 as it will not be easy to prise him away from the club easily.

And following Leicester’s qualification for the Champions League knockout phase, it’s unlikely that the Premier League champions will allow the midfielder to leave in the upcoming transfer window.

Mourinho’s side as of late endured a fourth successive home draw as a handy West Ham United group held them to a 1-1 draw and are as of now undergoing their most remarkably awful start to a Premier league campaign.
