Arsenal are up against Southampton in the Quarter Finals of the EFL Cup and they will be hosting the Saints at the Emirates on Wednesday. This is a competition where Arsenal haven’t done too well and Arsene Wenger has never won this particular silverware.
Arsenal are without Olivier Giroud who has a groin problem. Mathieu Debuchy is also out for his hamstring injury. And Santi Cazorla, Hector Bellerin, Per Mertesacker and Danny Welbeck are still out.
Southampton will be without Mccarthy and Targett.
Team News and Preview:
The Gunners will be welcoming Lucas Perez back into the team and Wenger is expected to play a strong squad as he has emphasized on doing well in Domestic Cup competitions. Injury of Debuchy means either Jenkinson will feature or Maitland-Niles will play as the right back. Also we can expect to see some academy stars of Arsenal to play in the game. The Gunners are 19 games unbeaten in all competitions and will be looking to extend that.
The visitors manager Claude Puel may well also be looking to give opportunities to some of his younger players, but being a quarter final they might also opt to field a full strength team. They have just won 3 of their last 8 matches and will be expecting to do what they did two years ago in this competition against this very opponent. Charlie Austin’s duel with Arsenal centre backs will be an interesting watch as the striker has been in good form off late. Being a former student of Arsene Wenger in his Monaco days, Puel will know some bit of Arsene Wenger and he will have to imply that to grind out any positive result.
- These two clubs last met in this competition 2 years ago, when Southampton stunned Arsenal at the Emirates and won it 2-1.
- But most recently, Arsenal have met Saints at the Emirates in the Premier League this season, when Arsenal edged past Southampton 2-1 courtesy of a stoppage time spot kick from Santi Cazorla.
The match will telecast live on Ten 3 for Indian viewers from 1.15 IST on 1st December
