This seems to be the season of injuries for the Indian Cricket Team.
Three of the key players – Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are already injured, and this time it is all-rounder Hardik Pandya who suffered an unfortunate injury while practicing at the nets in Mohali. Pandya is expected to be out of action for at least six weeks after suffering a fracture in his right shoulder, the Board for Control of Cricket in India confirmed on Tuesday (November 29).
Pandya was handed a maiden Test cap for the on-going India-England Test series due to the absence of the other three key players. He was however not included in the playing XI.
The 23 year old’s selection in the Test team was a matter of debate, with most critics arguing that the youngster was not experienced enough to play Test cricket.
On his cricket CV the youngster has merely 16 first class matches and his wicket Tally sums up to only 22 at an average of 33. He has the experience of playing in only 4 one day Internationals and 16 Twenty20 internationals. He got an opportunity to be a part of the recently concluded World Cup 2016 and was also awarded the man of the match on his very first ODI match but it was very clear the all rounder was not suited for the longest format of the game.
MSK Prasad, the current chairman of selectors, saw Pandya bowl on India A’s tour of Australia, a tour which paved Pandya’s way into the ODI side and then into the Test squad.
“Pandya’s pace has increased, he is moving the ball, his batsmanship has improved,” Prasad said. “And he has mellowed down as a person. He is one allrounder we thought is an equally competent bowler and batsman. And a good fielder too,” MSK Prasad added after selecting Pandya.
The 23 year old is very fondly remembered for his last over against Bangladesh in the recently concluded Asia Cup Match which Indian Cricket Team won by a solitary Run. Prior to succumbing to the injury, he was the only uncapped player in the squad. Jayant Yadav made his debut in Vizag whereas Karun Nair got the same in Mohali.
